Minutes of the September 13 , 2020 meeting of the
Michiana Bonsai Study
Present: Larry Benjamin, Tom & Diane Buday, John Deguara, John DeMaegd, Mary Hesser, Graig Kirkwood, Steve Moore
Ted Vanderbeek, and Wanda Walker
Location: Home of John DeMaegd
Program:
The meeting started with a brief business report from Larry. He announced (and, displayed) our new club banner. After reporting the club's
baank balance, Larry announced his new position as the Membership Secretary of the American Bonsai Society and encouraged members to
join. This included two newcomers: Ted Vanderbeek and Craig Kirkwood.
At first (even before the business meeting) everyone wandered around John's yard viewing his collection of trees. Then, several got down to work
on their trees. Mary Hesser brought a root-over-rock Burtt Davii which she wanted o repot. Diane Buday got some advice on her Ficus and decided
to bring it to next month's meeting to repot it at a different angle. John Deguara brought a nice Scotts pine. He got some ideas on fertilization and
worked out some plans for pruning next spring. Wanda Walker did more work than anyone! She brought a tropical (she is not sure of the species).
She had both a male and female tree but the male had died. However, the female plant was quite healthy - with a nice-sized trunk. She took it out of
its training pot and transplanted it into a nice blue bonsai pot. She then pruned it back - a lot - empahsizing that big trunk.
Before we left we got to taste some tasty snacks that John (and, his wife, Glen) had prepared for us. And, some of us were thankful to receive
a gift from Mary: free eggs from the chickens on her farm.
