Minutes of the November 12,
2017 meeting of the Michiana Bonsai Study
Present: Larry Benjamin, Cody Chilson, John DeMaegd, Mary Hesser, Betty & Jack Holtz and Kathy Lee
Location: The home of Rose & Larry Benjamin
Program:
There was no "program", as such. But, as we sat around the table to enjoy lunch, we discussed ideas for
club activities for 2018. Larry announced that he had already reserved Linton's Enchanted Gardens as the
location for our February and March meetings. (He reminded everyone that we had decided not to meet in
January at the September meeting.) While the program for our February (4) meeting is still incomplete, we
decided to invite John Cerovski, from Kalamazoo, to present at our March (4) meeting. He will help us with a
BYOT program where we can take wire off of trees, work on any maples or conifers that are out of storage,
and discuss the styling of our trees. (NOTE: Larry has contacted John and confirmed his appearance.)
Since the April (8) and May (6) meetings will be at times at which there will be lots of work to do on our
trees, we decided to do BYOT work sessions then as well. In order to make the public (and, especially anyone
interested in bonsai) aware of our exiatence, we decided to try to put on a bonsai exhibit at the South Bend
Botanical Conservatory in June. The July (21) meeting will offer an opportunity for us to go join the Ft. Wayne
club for their annual picnic and auction.
To fill out our schedule, Larry encouraged everyone to attend some of the special bonsai events of 2018,
including the ABS convention April 19 - 22 in Collinsville, Illinois (near St. Louis), the Michigan All-State Show
at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids May 12, and the Chicago Show at the their Botanical Garden August 17 & 18.
