Minutes of the May
6, 2018 meeting of the Michiana Bonsai Study
Present: Larry Benjamin, John Cerovski, Cody Chilson, John DeMaegd, Betty Foltz, Jack Foltz,
Mary Hesser, Kathy Lee, and Wanda Walker
Location: Home of Larry Benjamin, Bristol
Refreshments: Mary Hesser
Program:
Upon arrival, attendees were given a look at Larry's garden planting of 31 trees, most over
china plates, to enhance their growth, increasing trunk girth while keeping their roots shallow.
He also exhibited the three trees he worked on in workshops at the April Collinsville, IL, ABS
convention .
Then, everyone had a chance to get some spring work done on their trees. Kathy
repotted a Bougainvillea with nice small leaves. John Cerovski trimmed back some of the
vigorous growth in a very nice Amur maple. Mary repotted and pruned her little shohin and
others did a variety of things to their trees.
Midway through our work Larry had his five year old granddaughter draw to determine
if one of the two remaining 2018 giveaway trees was to be awarded at this meeting.
The result was, "no".
Eventually, we took a break to eat the fine refreshments that Mary had brought. These were
enhanced by cheese and crackers which Wanda had brought as well. It was quite a feast! And,
while we ate we had a chance to carry on some interesting and informative discussions.
By the time we finished "dining", it was almost 4:00. A few of us did some final work on our
trees and then said "goodbye".
