Minutes of
the February 2, 2020 meeting of the Michiana Bonsai Study
Present: Larry Benjamin, John Deguara,John DeMaegd, Betty Foltz, Jack Foltz, Mary Hesser,
Location: Linton's Enchanted Gardens
Program:
Our main emphasis was on planning for what to do with our bonsai this year. Paul pointed out that
it is possible to work on evergreens even now. However, he cautioned that work such as wiring should
not be done on frozen trees. If they are brought into a warmer place (eg., a garage) where they can
thaw out, work can commence. On deciduous trees we should wait until growth begins so that the sap
that flows can herden on cut tips to seal them. As to repotting, John discussed the value of raid-draining
bonsai soil for our trees. Larry reminded us that our club provides bonsai "soil" for members to use to
pot their trees.
During the meeting Larry shared information about the June 6 Wellfield Botanic Garden Bonsai Show.
He encouraged members to not only bring their trees to exhibit but also volunteer as docents to man the
exhibit of trees. He promised to send out more detailed information as it becomes available.
